The\u00c2\u00a0vineyard is moving slowly towards the harvest period and the grapes have at last entered the beginning of\u00c2\u00a0their ripening phase. This vintage, 2011, has been particularly cool so the ripening stages are at least three weeks later than last vintage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Farm-netted-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27 \" title=\"hahndorf hill in the adelaide hills wine region\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Farm-netted--300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Farm-netted--300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Farm-netted--1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Farm-netted-.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hahndorf Hill Vineyard covered in a snow-storm of bird netting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the grapes pick up colour and sugar, so too does the interest increase\u00c2\u00a0from the local birds and we are therefore forced to cover the entire vineyard with bird netting to protect the grapes. The placing out of the bird netting\u00c2\u00a0is a tedious, costly and labour intensive process &#8211; but it&#8217;s the best way to protect the grapes from our wily feathered friends, who are great grape connoisseurs!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Gruner-netted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26 \" title=\"Hahndorf hill in the adelaide hills wine region\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Gruner-netted-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Gruner-netted-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.thegrufiles.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Gruner-netted.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Larry Jacobs in Gruner Veltliner block &#8211; recently bird netted.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Gruner\u00c2\u00a0block has, of course, also been netted as the pic on the left shows. I must confess, it&#8217;s extremely exciting to walk through the Gruner block and watch\u00c2\u00a0how\u00c2\u00a0the plump little bunches turn from dark pea-green\u00c2\u00a0berries to translucent golden-green orbs as they slowly begin to develop flavour and sugar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">As the Gruner begins its ripening phase it was quite appropriate, yesterday, to conclude a rather\u00c2\u00a0historic event in the Adelaide Hills.\u00c2\u00a0On 16th February 2011 there was the first\u00c2\u00a0gathering of the Adelaide Hills\u00c2\u00a0Gruner Grower&#8217;s Group at the beautiful cellardoor of K1 Wines.
